Fort Knox, the Observatory and a Perfect Bucksport Day Trip
History, waterfront views, local food, ice cream and the world’s tallest public bridge observatory are all just a short drive from Holden Family Campground.
There are places in Maine that you visit because they’re famous, and then there are places that become special because of the memories you make there.
Bucksport is one of those places.
Located along the Penobscot River, Bucksport offers a wonderful combination of Maine history, beautiful scenery, local food, small-town charm and one truly unforgettable view. And for guests staying at Holden Family Campground, it’s close enough to make an easy day trip while offering enough to see and do to turn a few hours into a memorable Maine adventure.
You can explore a historic fort, stand 420 feet above the Penobscot River, enjoy a good meal, wander along the waterfront, grab an ice cream and settle into a beautiful Maine summer evening. And you don’t have to rush.
That’s part of the beauty of Bucksport.
Fort Knox: A Place That Holds Generations of Memories
For me, Fort Knox is more than a historic site.
As a lifelong Mainer, I’ve been visiting Fort Knox for years. My first experiences there were on school field trips when I was a child. I remember exploring the massive granite fort and learning about the history of this remarkable place.
Years later, I found myself returning with my own children.
There’s something special about taking your kids to places you visited yourself when you were young. You get to see the experience through their eyes while remembering your own.
Fort Knox was built beginning in 1844 as a coastal defense fort overlooking the Penobscot River. Although it was constructed to protect the river from a potential British invasion, the fort never actually saw major combat.
Today, visitors can explore the massive granite structure, including its rooms, passageways, casemates and stairways.
It’s easy to imagine the soldiers who once occupied the fort and to appreciate just how much work went into constructing it. And the location couldn’t be more spectacular.
The fort sits overlooking the Penobscot River, with the Penobscot Narrows Bridge rising nearby.
Which brings us to another remarkable part of a visit to Bucksport.
The Penobscot Narrows Bridge & Observatory
You can see the Penobscot Narrows Bridge from all around Bucksport, but seeing it from 420 feet above the river is an entirely different experience.
The cable-stayed bridge spans the Penobscot River, but what makes it particularly unique is the public observatory built into one of its towers.
Take the elevator approximately 420 feet up, and you’ll arrive at a glass-enclosed observatory with spectacular panoramic views.
From there, you can look down on the Penobscot River, across toward Bucksport and Fort Knox, and out over the surrounding forests, waterways and countryside.
And here’s something many people don’t realize:
The Penobscot Narrows Observatory is the tallest public bridge observatory in the world and one of only four bridge observatories in the world.
Think about that.
One of only four in the entire world is right here in Maine.
It’s an incredible piece of engineering and an attraction that is easy to overlook if you’re simply driving through the area.
Don’t.
Make the stop.
The view is worth it.
Come Down From the Sky and Enjoy the Waterfront
After experiencing Bucksport from 420 feet above the river, head into town and experience it from the ground.
The Bucksport Waterfront Walkway is one of my favorite parts of the area.
There are places where you can walk along the river, sit and relax, watch the boats, take pictures or simply enjoy the view.
The waterfront gives you a completely different perspective of the Penobscot Narrows Bridge.
From the observatory, you’re looking down at the river and the town.
From the riverwalk, you’re looking across the water at the bridge and Fort Knox.
Both are beautiful.
And you don’t have to make your waterfront visit into an activity.
Sometimes the best thing to do is simply sit.
Good Food, Ice Cream & a Laid-Back Summer Evening
One of the things I enjoy about Bucksport is how easy it is to turn sightseeing into a relaxed day.
My husband and I have enjoyed breakfast at Bucksport Waterfront Restaurant, and it’s a wonderful way to start a morning in town before heading out to explore.
For a casual Maine seafood meal, we’ve also enjoyed Carrier’s Mainely Lobster and Crosby’s Drive-In.
These are the kinds of places that fit perfectly into a Maine day trip…casual, unhurried and just right for enjoying some classic Maine fare.
And then there is ice cream.
The Dairy Port is a stop we don’t like to miss. After getting our ice cream, we can simply walk across the road toward the riverwalk, find a place to sit and enjoy it while taking in the scenery.
There’s something about sitting beside the Penobscot River on a warm summer evening, ice cream in hand, looking toward Fort Knox and the Penobscot Narrows Bridge.
The boats may be passing by. The sun may be starting to settle into the evening. And there’s nowhere you need to be.
It’s simple, but it’s one of those moments that feels like Maine.
The Story of MacLeod’s Continues
If you’ve been coming to Bucksport for years, you may remember MacLeod’s Restaurant.
MacLeod’s was a Bucksport institution for 45 years, welcoming generations of locals and visitors before closing in April 2025. But the story of that familiar downtown location didn’t end there.
Where MacLeod’s once welcomed generations of Bucksport visitors, Stowaway’s Town Tavern now carries on the tradition at 63 Main Street.
The restaurant brings a new chapter to a location that has been part of the community’s dining history for decades, offering a casual tavern atmosphere with seafood, steaks, burgers, sandwiches and other hearty favorites.
For those of us who remember MacLeod’s, it’s nice to see the familiar location continue to be a place where people gather. MacLeod’s chapter may have ended, but the story of this downtown spot continues.
More Places to Eat in Bucksport
Bucksport has several other choices if you’re looking for something different during your visit.
Bucksport House of Pizza is a convenient casual option for pizza and comfort food, particularly for families or groups with different tastes.
For something a little different, Chalee Thai & Sushi brings Thai and sushi options to Main Street.
Salsa Shack offers Mexican-inspired food, including tacos, burritos and quesadillas.
And for a more intimate dining experience, The Phoenix Cafe offers a cozy downtown atmosphere in the historic Heywood House.
There’s something nice about having choices without losing that small-town Maine feeling.
Wander Main Street
Don’t make the mistake of seeing Bucksport only from your car.
Park downtown and walk.
Main Street has a collection of local businesses and small-town attractions that are easy to miss when you’re simply passing through.
The Lighthouse Arts Center is worth a stop for those who enjoy local art, while the Bucksport Historical Society offers another opportunity to learn about the community’s history.
There’s also the Alamo Theatre, a historic single-screen theater downtown.
These are the kinds of places that can easily be missed when you’re focused on getting to the next major attraction.
Take your time. Look around. That’s how you discover a town.
More Than Just a Waterfront View
The waterfront is certainly one of the highlights of Bucksport, but there’s more to explore if you have extra time.
The town’s marina and public landing add to the working waterfront atmosphere, and the area provides opportunities to watch boats coming and going along the Penobscot River.
Outdoor enthusiasts can also explore nearby natural areas, including Great Pond Mountain Wildlands, with miles of trails and thousands of acres of protected land.
If you’re looking for a quieter pace, there are plenty of opportunities around Bucksport to step away from the main tourist attractions and simply enjoy the Maine landscape.
A Perfect Bucksport Day From Holden Family Campground
For guests staying at Holden Family Campground, Bucksport makes an especially easy day trip.
It’s close enough that you don’t have to spend your entire day in the car, but there’s enough to see and do to make it feel like you’ve had a real Maine adventure.
Here’s one way to enjoy it:
Start at Fort Knox.
Explore the historic fort and take a step back in time.
Then visit the Penobscot Narrows Bridge Observatory.
Ride 420 feet into the sky and experience one of the most unusual viewpoints in Maine—and one of only four bridge observatories in the world.
Head into downtown Bucksport.
Walk Main Street and make your way toward the waterfront.
Enjoy a meal.
Have breakfast at Bucksport Waterfront Restaurant or choose from one of the town’s other local restaurants.
Walk the riverfront.
Take your time. Sit near the water. Watch the boats. Photograph the bridge.
Get ice cream at The Dairy Port.
Then walk just across the road and settle into a spot along the riverwalk.
Enjoy the ice cream.
Enjoy the view.
Enjoy the evening.
And don’t worry about what comes next.
A Short Drive That Feels Like a Maine Adventure
That’s what I love about Bucksport.
As a lifelong Mainer, I’ve been there as a child on a school field trip, as a mother taking my own children to explore Fort Knox, and now as a wife enjoying a quiet summer evening with my husband.
The places may be familiar, but the memories are always new.
And that’s what makes Maine so special.
You don’t always have to travel far to have a great day.
Sometimes it’s just a short drive from the campground.
A historic fort.
A spectacular bridge.
A waterfront walk.
A good meal.
An ice cream cone.
And a beautiful summer evening beside the Penobscot River.
Bucksport is more than a place to drive through on your way somewhere else.
It’s a place to stop.
To explore.
To eat.
To walk.
To sit.
To take in the view.
And most importantly, to make a memory.
