There is something about autumn in Maine that is hard to put into words.

The air turns crisp. The mornings become cool and quiet. The smell of wood smoke starts drifting through the air. And then, almost overnight, the forests begin to change.

Green gives way to brilliant shades of red, orange, yellow and gold. Hillsides come alive with color, reflecting in lakes and rivers and

This is leaf-peeping season in Maine and if you have never experienced it from behind the wheel of an RV, with the freedom to explore at your own pace, fall is the perfect time to visit.

When Is the Best Time to See Fall Foliage?

One of the most common questions we hear is:

“When should we come to see the leaves?”

The answer is: it depends on where you want to go.

Maine’s fall color generally moves from north to south as the season progresses.

Northern Maine typically begins showing color in late September and early October, while central Maine follows into October. The farther south you travel, the later the foliage tends to develop.

For the areas surrounding Holden and heading east toward the coast, early to mid-October is an especially beautiful time to explore.

The Maine Forest Service typically identifies the second week of October as a prime foliage period for much of eastern Maine, including the Downeast and Acadia region. But don’t get too caught up in finding one “perfect” weekend.

One of the best things about staying at Holden Family Campground is that you can explore in different directions as the foliage progresses.

Come in late September or early October and head north toward the mountains and inland lakes.

Come during the first or second week of October and explore the brilliant forests, Acadia and the Downeast coast.

The color comes to you. You just have to know where to go.

Why Holden Family Campground Makes a Great Fall Home Base

Located in Holden, just outside Bangor, Holden Family Campground sits directly on Route 1A, the route that takes you toward Ellsworth, Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park.

Fall Foliage Adventures from Holden

1. Acadia National Park & Bar Harbor

If you have never experienced Acadia in the fall, put this one at the top of your list.

The combination of mountains, forests, lakes, rocky coastline and ocean views makes Acadia one of the most spectacular places in Maine to experience autumn.

The Park Loop Road provides access to many of the park’s iconic sights, while the carriage roads and hiking trails offer opportunities to get out of the vehicle and experience the forest up close.

Mid-October is often an excellent time to experience fall color in Acadia.

And don’t forget to spend some time in Bar Harbor. Grab lunch, walk along the waterfront, browse the shops and enjoy the atmosphere of this classic Maine coastal town.

For a quieter alternative, consider exploring the Schoodic Peninsula. The Schoodic National Scenic Byway combines colorful forests with dramatic coastal scenery and is a wonderful fall drive.

Fall tip: Start early. October is a popular time to visit Acadia, and an early start gives you more time to enjoy the scenery without feeling rushed.

2. Route 1A: The Scenic Road to the Coast

One of the advantages of staying at Holden Family Campground is that you don’t have to make your sightseeing complicated.

Route 1A is right outside the campground.

Head east and watch the scenery gradually change as you travel toward Ellsworth and the coast.

What makes a Maine fall drive so enjoyable isn’t necessarily one particular attraction. It’s the collection of little moments along the way:

A brilliant red maple beside an old farmhouse.

A golden hillside behind a quiet lake.

A roadside farm stand.

A weathered barn surrounded by trees.

A glimpse of the ocean.

A small village you’ve never heard of.

Sometimes the best leaf-peeping destination is simply the road you’re traveling on.

3. Downeast Maine & the Bold Coast

If you have a full day available, head farther DownEast.

The Bold Coast Scenic Byway offers a wonderful combination of forests, blueberry barrens, fishing villages, lakes and rugged coastline.

Fall makes this drive especially beautiful because you get two very different Maine landscapes at the same time:

Brilliant autumn forests on one side. The wild Atlantic coastline on the other.

Pack a lunch, bring your camera and give yourself plenty of time.

This is not a drive to rush through.

4. Camden & the Midcoast

Want to see Maine’s famous “mountains meet the sea” scenery?

Head south toward Camden.

Camden Hills State Park is one of the classic places to experience it. From the higher elevations, you can look across Camden Harbor and Penobscot Bay while the surrounding forests begin putting on their autumn display.

For an early-to-mid-October trip, Camden can be a wonderful choice if you’re looking to combine fall foliage with Maine’s famous coastal scenery.

Spend the day exploring Camden, enjoy lunch by the harbor and then make your way back to Holden for the evening.

It’s a wonderful full-day fall road trip.

Don’t Overlook the Beauty Close to Camp

You don’t always have to drive for hours to find beautiful fall scenery.

One of the joys of staying at Holden Family Campground is being close to the Bangor area, while still having easy access to the lakes, rivers, forests and smaller communities that make central Maine special.

Take a leisurely drive. Find a quiet country road. Stop beside a lake. Walk a local trail. Grab coffee in a nearby town. Let the day unfold without trying to check every attraction off a list.

That’s how you experience Maine.

And if you’re looking for a shorter outing, there are also beautiful coastal preserves and trails farther east toward Deer Isle and Stonington, where autumn woods meet rocky shoreline and island views.

A Simple Fall Foliage Road Trip from Holden

Day 4 — Take a Scenic Drive

Depending on the foliage conditions, head north toward the mountains or east toward the coast.
